First heatwave in Lyon: the City relaunches its "Objective Coolness" plan to protect residents

With the first heatwave of the year expected in Lyon this week, the City of Lyon is activating its "Freshness Objective" program. Until September, numerous measures are being implemented to help residents cope with temperatures that could climb to 35°C as early as this Friday.

It's going to be hot in Lyon this week, and the first heatwave temperatures are expected on Friday, with temperatures as high as 35 degrees Celsius (95°F), according to Météo France. To cope with this first heatwave of 2025, the city is relaunching its "Freshness Objective" program for the second consecutive year.

This system aims to protect the people of Lyon, especially the most vulnerable, from the effects of extreme heat. A toll-free number (04 72 10 36 26) informs the population about the right reflexes to adopt. In the event of a heightened heatwave alert, the air-conditioned municipal museums (Fine Arts, Contemporary Art, Gadagne) will open their doors free of charge. The list of 743 cool places – traboules, fountains, cooled public facilities – is available online .

Large urban parks will also play a key role: in the event of an orange or red alert, those of Tête d'Or, Gerland, and Blandan will remain open late into the evening, with the possibility, in the latter, of sleeping under the stars, in a demarcated and supervised area. This measure is triggered in the event of a red heatwave alert, the municipality nevertheless explains. For children, new water games will be installed in several city parks while swimming pools will open with extended hours this summer.

" Finally, and as a reminder, the City of Lyon maintains a file of vulnerable people. In the event of extreme heat, the City of Lyon's Communal Social Action Center (CCAS) listens to vulnerable people registered on the heatwave file to ensure that everything is going well and provide appropriate advice, " the community explains.

A system that will remain in effect throughout the summer.
